While most 16 year old boys are getting their driver license and finding a part time job during summer vacation, Zac Sunderland, a southland boy, is wrapping up plans to embark on a solo-sail trip around the world. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times newspaper, Monday, May 26, 2008 he told the Times he wants to be the youngest person to hold the record. Sunderland will set sail on Saturday, May 31, 2008 from Marina Del Ray and will sail about 40,000 miles. He plans to beat the record formerly held by David Dicks. Zac’s stops along the way will be welcomed by his father and he will be in close contact with family by way of cell phone, e-mail and blogging. Even though he has been sailing all his life and his parents are sailors this year long voyage isn’t without danger along the way including loneliness, fatigue, sea storms, pirates, breakdowns and diet.
Updates to the solo-sail adventure will be posted here www.zacsunderland.com where there is a countdown calendar. As of today Sunderland’s departure will be in 4 days 14 hours 2 minutes 20 seconds. Solo-sail updates will also be posted here at Valley Girl Musings.
