Malibu and Its Dogs

Malibu is well-known for its many beautiful beaches. However, dogs are not allowed on almost all of them, not even if the dogs are on leash! That’s because, according to one of our community police officers, people have been irresponsible about cleaning up after their dogs. As a result, dog policies in the city of Malibu have become very strict.

Such a Nice Boy - book spotlight

Thirty years ago actor Rock Hudson revealed to the entertainment world that he was gay.  That was unthinkable in Hollywood’s eyes, how could Hudson be gay when he was so perfect in his roles with Doris Day? Our guest author, today, is Daren Krupa and his novel Such a Nice Boy reveals the fact that the main character is living a life as a gay man, except he discovers that, women are pretty, friendly and maybe preferred over men. Maybe, Hollywood will make this novel, Such a Nice Boy into its next movie.

About Darren Krupa

Daren Krupa’s junior class English assignment was to write a meaning of life essay.  All he could think was meaning of life? I’m fifteen years old. I don’t know diddley about life! The one lucid moment of his youth.

A native of New York State Krupa grew up in Phoenix and worked as a newspaper reporter and editor, waiter and telemarketer. At least a dozen novels have presented themselves throughout his life. Such a Nice Boy is the second he wrote and the first to be published.
Krupa lives in the Sonoran desert. You can visit him at his website SuchaNiceBoy.com. If you would like to contact the author, you can email him at darenk@SuchaNiceBoy.com.

The Pursuit of Something Better - Author Interview - Dave Esler and Myra Kruger

The Real Hollywood’s Book Chat welcomes authors Dave Esler and Myra Kruger, authors of the business/leadership/business ethics book, The Pursuit of Something Better: How an Underdog Company Defied the Odds, Won Customers' Hearts, and Grew It's Employees into Better People (Esler Kruger Associates, Inc.), as they virtually tour the blogosphere in July on their first virtual book tour with Pump Up Your Book Promotion

The Pursuit of Something Better tells the story of the transformation of U.S. Cellular from a thoroughly ordinary company—ranked eighth in its industry and in danger of extinction—into an organization that is loved by employees and customers alike, and a proven winner by every measure.

Even more impressive is how this transformation took place. U.S. Cellular focused on the “soft stuff” so often discredited by conventional business wisdom; values and heart; inspirational and empowering leadership; motivation by values, not fear; ethics and integrity and an insistence on always doing the right thing. Most of all, U.S. Cellular thrived by obsessively putting the customer, and the quality of the customer experience, first.

The Pursuit of Something Better is also the story of Jack Rooney, the unconventional CEO who had the vision to see the limitations of the traditional business model a decade before it imploded, and the courage to replace it with something much, much better.

Hollywood Trivia Interview with J.A. Hunsinger Author of Axe of Iron

How would you convince seven shipwrecked individuals on a deserted island to buy your book? If you were asked to give a speech on the Book Walk of Fame what would you thank and why? Find out all this and more today when The Real Hollywood’s Book chat welcomes author J.A. Hunsinger, author of the historical fiction novel Axe of Iron: The Settlers.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
The first novel of a continuing character-driven tale of a medieval people whose wanderlust and yearning for adventure cause them to leave the two established settlements on Greenland and sail west, to the unexplored land later referred to as Vinland.

Eirik the Red established Eiriksfjord in 986 and later Lysufjord, 400-miles to the north. Just 22-years later, new settlers from the homelands found all the best land already occupied, the fragile Arctic environment strained by too many people and animals on too little arable land.

Under the capable leadership of Halfdan Ingolfsson and his lieutenant, Gudbjartur Einarsson, 315 men, women, and children set sail from Greenland in the spring of 1008, bound for the unexplored continent across the western ocean.

Standing in their way are uncounted numbers of indigenous people, the pre-historical ancestors of the Cree (Naskapi), Ojibwa (Anishinabeg), and Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) Indians. From the outset, these native people strenuously resist the incursion of these tall, pale-skinned invaders.

Two calamitous events occur that pave the way for the hostile beginnings of an assimilation process to occur between these disparate peoples. The way is rocky and fraught with danger at every turn, but the acceptance and friendship that develops between the Northmen and the Naskapi over an affair of honor, the eventual acceptance of a young boy of the Northmen by his Haudenosaunee captors, and a scenario that seems ordained by the will of the gods, makes it all begin to fall into place, as it must for the Northmen to survive.

See the saga unfold, in this first book of the Axe of Iron series, through the eyes of the characters as each day brings a continuation of the toil, love, hardship, and danger that they come to expect in this unforgiving new land.

THE INTERVIEW:
1. Gilligan’s Island Trivia – Taking a three hour boat tour, you find yourself shipwrecked on this tiny little remote island where 7 people were also shipwrecked. How would you convince this varied audience to read your book? Remember on this island besides The Skipper, his little buddy Gilligan and MaryAnn, is the smart Professor, the rich Mr.& Mrs. Howell who have the money to make your book into a movie and Ginger the movie star who might have a starring role. Please talk to the audience not to me.

In spite of the mess that we are in, I may have a solution in my new book, Axe of Iron: The Settlers. Fortunately, for us, I have a copy with me and I will be happy to share it with all of you. My book is a story about a medieval people whose lives are surprisingly like ours, although they are not trapped on an island. They have the same basic desires for happiness, love, food, and shelter that we have. Within these pages, you will find survival skills that are essential. Since we are eight in number we can either take turns reading it aloud to the others, which makes the most sense given our circumstance, or you can share the book individually. Of course many of us will starve waiting to read the book if we choose the later—you decide.

2. Wheel of Fortune – you have been asked by the Wheel of Fortune writers to create a word puzzle spelling one of the books characters his/her name. Which character name would you want on the Wheel of Fortune puzzle board and why?

Gudbjartur Einarsson, the expeditions second-in-command, comes to mind because it is difficult, in a contemporary sense, to pronounce. The fact that he is literally, ‘Einar’s son,’ would add another level of difficulty to the puzzle.

3. Hollywood Book Walk of Fame – A bookstore in Hollywood, California had decided that books should have their own walk of fame. So they have lined the sidewalk in front of their store with book molds in the sidewalk. Your name is to appear on one of these book molds. You give an acceptance speech at the ceremony. What would you say and who would you thank?

Ladies and gentlemen, and members of the Awards Committee, good afternoon. What a beautiful day you have selected to convene this ceremony. I am humbled to receive this honor for my writing and me. This honor has vindicated my lifetime pursuit of perfection with the written word. I wish to thank my parents for ensuring that I received the best education possible in the parochial school system. To my many merciless editors I must give resounding thanks, for they did not allow me to be satisfied with mediocre prose. Last, but not least, I wish to thank my wife Phyllis. She never gave up, let up, or allowed me to shirk my duty to the task that I had undertaken. Thanks, Babe! Without you, I would not have gotten here.

Thank you Jerry, for stopping by The Real Hollywood blog on your virtual book tour. I wish you continued success on your virtual book tour and who knows your book might just make it to the silver screen.

You are welcome. Thank you for inviting me, it has been fun. Should anyone want my book, here are a few links:

My Splendid Concubine - Author Interview - Lloyd Lofthouse

Lloyd Lofthouse, author of the historical fiction novel, My Splendid Concubine and a Southern California Native, has graciously agreed to join us for two days here at The Real Hollywood. Lloyd is on his first virtual book tour with Pump Up Your Book Promotion!

About the Author:
As a field radio operator, Lloyd Lofthouse was a walking target in Vietnam in 1966. He has skied in blizzards at forty below zero and climbed mountains in hip deep snow.

Lloyd earned a BA in journalism after fighting in Vietnam as a U.S. Marine. Later, while working days as an English teacher at a high school in California, he earned an MFA in writing. He enjoyed a job as a maitre d’ in a multimillion-dollar nightclub and tried his hand successfully at counting cards in Las Vegas for a few years. He now lives near San Francisco with his wife, with a second home in Shanghai, China.

Book Review"Love for ones wives' sister is typically forbidden by most Western religions, but the most successful Westerner in Chinese history is faced with this conflict. "My Splendid Concubine" is the tale of Robert Hart who deals with matters of his lust and how to deal with them the Chinese way, which so conflict with his upbringing. The Taiping Rebellion doesn't help matters, him making enemies of established and skilled mercenaries in the process of protecting his interest and the women he loves. "My Splendid Concubine" is packed cover to cover with intriguing characters and plot, a must read for historical fiction fans and a fine addition to any collection on the genre."
--Midwest Book Reviews

Hi Lloyd,

Welcome to The Real Hollywood’s Book Chat,

Thank you for having me as a guest.

RH: If your book were sold for movie rights which actor/actress would you want to play the main character?

LL: Since Colin Farrell is a native of Dublin, Ireland, I’d select him to play the lead. I believe he would understand Robert Hart better than most. Of course, the make-up artists would have to make Colin a bit younger since Robert Hart was nineteen when he arrived in China in 1854. That shouldn’t be difficult since Colin has a youthful look.

RH: Who would you want to play the supporting characters?

LL: For the Chinese actors in the My Splendid Concubine movie, I’d like to see a talent search similar to the one that found Brandon Walters who starred with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackson in Australia. It would be ideal to find a young, talented Chinese girl about nineteen to play Ayaou.

RH: If your book was already sold for movie rights, tell how it felt to be approached by Hollywood and what the journey has been like.

LL: Since I’ve been through it with my wife for every book she’s written, I’d appreciate the check but wouldn’t hold my breath since Hollywood buys the rights to hundreds if not thousands of stories that are never made into movies. For almost two decades someone has bought the film rights to my wife’s books and none of them have made it to the big screen—yet. However, if My Splendid Concubine started production, I’d probably wake up worried everyday wondering how close to the book the movie would turn out and pray that the script wouldn’t stray too far from Robert Hart’s character and the history of that time.

RH: Who is your favorite actor and/or actress?

LL: That’s a hard question. I don’t have a favorite. I see a lot of movies and have a long list of favorite actors and actresses. Just to name a few: Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Anthony Hopkins, Mel Gibson, Bette Midler, Robert Redford, Sally Field, Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, Clint Eastwood, Denzel Washington, Helen Mirren—I could fill pages.

RH: Is there a movie you could watch over and over again?

LL: It wouldn’t be fair to all the others I’ve enjoyed more than once to name one. I’ve watched The Lord of the Rings; Pretty Woman; The Postman; Gladiator; Master and Commander; The Electric Horseman; The Bodyguard; Waterworld; Ghost more than once—as you can see, I have an extensive collection of videos and DVDs. These are a few.

RH: Who is your favorite author?

LL: James Lee Burke. He’s at the top of my list.

RH: What books have you read by this author?

LL: I’ve read all Burke’s books and seen Heaven’s Prisoners (1996) starring Alec Baldwin.

RH: Burke’s book, In the Electric Mist, is scheduled to be released March 2009. Tommy Lee Jones stars. This actor should have been on the list above. I will certainly see this move. When I see that Tommy Lee Jones is in a movie, I go.

RH: What is next on the horizon for you?

LL: Finish Our Hart, the sequel to My Splendid Concubine and complete a memoir I’m writing in my spare time (laughs) that focuses on when I was an English/journalism teacher working at a rough, barrio high school. After that, I will return to a mystery I finished years ago based on when I was the maitre d’ in a nightclub called the Red Onion. I want to revise that mystery and publish it after the memoir. I’ve been writing and improving my craft for decades (since 1968) and have a lot of material to revise, polish and publish. I’m planning to start a small press too and publish other deserving authors—one or two a year since I’ll be a one man operation.

RH: Where can my readers find your website?

www.mysplendidconcubine.com
I thank you being sharing your book with The Real Hollywood, and I wish you continued success on your virtual book tour.

You are welcome, and I want to thank The Real Hollywood’s Book Chat for having me as a guest. It was a pleasure.

Hi Cate
Welcome to The Real Hollywood,

Hello and blessings to you!

RH: If your book were sold for movie rights which actor/actress would you want to play the main character?

CC: Allie is a little girl and I am not familiar with the newest of child actors but if she were the age (or could play it), I feel Dakota Fanning would make a great Allie. As for Brigid, Allie's godmother, Cate Blanchett would be a good pick as she can play anyone!

RH: Who would you want to play the supporting characters?

CC: Well, the supporting characters are a cat and a dog They might need to be CGI to capture the personalities they both have in the book.

RH: Who is your favorite actor and/or actress?

CC: My favorite actors are Morgan Freeman and Armand Assante, an actor who has been much overlooked. My favorite actresses are Angelina Jolie and Queen Latifa

RH: Is there a movie you could watch over and over again?

CC: I have many! The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, American Gangster and, with Halloween (Samhain for Pagans) coming up I always watch Monster Squad and The Lost Boys as a holiday ritual so to speak.

CC: My favorite author has to be J.H. Lawrence.

RH: What books have you read by this author?

CC: Sons and Lovers, Women In Love, Lady Chatterly's Lover

CC: I am looking to launch a media career based on my nonfiction work which is in the metaphysical/spiritual and self helps genres. I am widely read on the web and was a widely read politcal columnist in New York but feel the stronger connection to my spiritual path and what it can offer to others. My work can be read on numerous ezines, including selfgrowth.com.

RH: Where can my readers find your website? I have three websites: quantumspirituality.tripod.com, catecavanagh.com and somethingmagicalinourmists.blogspot.com

Hi, Marilyn Meredith,

Welcome to The Real Hollywood Blog,

MM Thank you for having me, this should be interesting.

RH: If your book were sold for movie rights which actor/actress would you want to play the main character?

MM: Since Deputy Tempe Crabtree is Native American, the actress would have to be Native American. Katreri Walker would be my first choice as she is close to the right age and looks enough like my descriptions of Tempe. A second choice would be Irene Bedara. She might be a bit too young, though. There aren’t a lot of Indian actresses to choose from. If there were a Tule River Indian who was an actress, she would be my first choice—but I don’t know of any. I do know some women of Native American heritage who would fit the part, but unfortunately they aren’t actresses.

RH: Who would you want to play the supporting characters?

MM: Tempe’s husband is auburn haired and I don’t know of any actor who would fit. Judge Reinhold would have been perfect—and still might. Her son, Blair, is blond and in his twenties—probably any young man of this description would fit. Adam Beach could easily play the part of Nick Two John.

RH: If your book was already sold for movie rights tell how it felt to be approached by Hollywood and what the journey has been like.

MM: I’ve not been fortunate enough to have that experience—darn.

RH: Who is your favorite actor and/or actress?

MM: I love movies. My husband and I got to the movies often and watch DVD’s at home. I have lots of actors and actresses that I enjoy. I especially like those who are able to really change with the part and not just play themselves in every movie. When I was a kid, I collected movie star autographs. Once I chased an actor’s car (Van Johnson) on foot and caught him at a stop light and got his autograph.

RH: Is there a movie you could watch over and over again?

MM: The one movie I did watch over and over was Gone With the Wind—and I’ll probably watch it again. When it first came out I was a kid and my mother and I went to see it five times. I grew up in Los Angeles, my dad worked for Paramount Studios, and our family went to the movies every Friday night, so I’ve always been a movie fan.

RH: Who is your favorite author? What books have you read by this author?

MM: One of my favorite authors is William Kent Krueger and I’ve read all of this books, but particularly like the Cork O’Conner series—and I suppose it’s because of the Native American elements in the books.

RH: What is next on the horizon for you?

I’ll be spending the next few months promoting Kindred Spirits, the latest in the Deputy Tempe Crabtree mystery series. The next one will come out next fall, Dispel the Mist, and I’m working on the one that comes out after that.

RH: Where can my readers find your website?

MM: http://fictionforyou.com and I also have a blog http://marilynmeredith.blogspot.com/

I thank you being sharing your book with The Real Hollywood Blog and I wish you continued success on your virtual book tour.

MM: And thank you for inviting me to visit your blog, it’s been fun.

Kindred Spirits

Sent to Crescent City in search of information introduces Tempe to the victim’s Tolowa relatives and friends–and two stalkers. Upon her return home, a pig’s heart on Tempe’s front porch serves as a warning. Detective Morrison becomes an unusual ally, and the victim’s spirit visits Tempe in the night. She and husband Hutch set off for Santa Barbara in an effort to flush out the murderer and once again finds her own life threatened.

Chapter One

Before Deputy Tempe Crabtree could see evidence of the forest fire, she could smell it.
Smoke was heavy in the air and got thicker as she drove up the highway into the mountains. Monday was one of her days off, but when something happened in her jurisdiction she was often the first responder. Her instructions from the sheriff’s sub-station in Dennison were to make sure everyone who lived in the path of the fire started in the higher elevations of Bear Creek canyon had obeyed evacuation orders.
As resident deputy of the large but sparsely populated area around the mountain community of Bear Creek, Tempe’s job usually consisted of making traffic stops, arresting drunk drivers, solving problems among neighbors, and looking for lost children or cattle. Along with the highway patrol, Tempe was the law in the community located in the southern Sierra where the foothills turned into mountains.
The last estimate Tempe had heard about the fast moving fire in rugged country was that it covered more than 1100 acres. She was stopped at the staging area by a highway patrolman she knew by sight though couldn’t remember his name.
Though his uniform still had sharp creases, large circles of dampness crept from his underarms. Opaque sunglasses covered his eyes. He put both hands on the open window of her Blazer as he bent down to speak to her. “Where’re you headed, Deputy?”
“My orders are to check out some of the houses in the path of the fire. Make sure everyone’s out.”
“Be careful you don’t put yourself in danger. It’s one fast-moving fire. It’s in a rough area where they haven’t been able to get in any personnel yet. They’re doing lots of water drops. All the roads are closed from here on up.”
“Thanks for the warning. I know some of the folks who might not have received the word yet.”
Tempe drove by the private airstrip that had been taken over as the fire command post. Men and equipment, fire engines, water tenders and bulldozers were being dispatched from there as well as truckloads of hand crews.
Leaving her window down, Tempe drove around the traffic cones that temporarily blocked access to the road. She planned to stop at the Donaldsons’, but they were loading horses into a trailer, obviously on their way out.
The higher she drove on the winding road, the darker the sky, the thicker the smoke, the harder it was to breathe. Ashes showered on her white Blazer. She passed fire trucks and men heading upward to fight the fire. In her heart she was thankful her son, Blair, was already back on the coast for his last year in college or he’d be on the fire lines. Fighting fire had been his first love since the age of sixteen when he began hanging around Bear Creek’s fire station.
Tempe stopped at several homes hidden down winding trails or perched on hilltops, surrounded by pine and cedar trees and underbrush. Most homes were deserted with signs of hurried evacuation.
Loaded pick-up trucks drove down the hill, some pulling horse or cattle trailers, not getting out any too soon from the looks of the black sky and the large amount of falling ash.
She had one more place she wanted to check. A beautiful home and separate studio built of sugar pine stood atop a knoll surrounded by Chaparral, and a thick pine forest. Tempe had been there once on a domestic abuse call. The owner, a well-known artist, Vanessa Ainsworth, now lived alone since her boy-friend had been served with a restraining order. If Vanessa wasn’t gone already, Tempe hoped to help her collect her animals and paintings and carry some of them out for her.
When Tempe made the last turn before Vanessa’s she was halted by a horrifying sight.

Book Chat - Kill 4 Me - chapter one - author Joel M Andre

The Real Hollywood’s Book Chat presents Chapter 1 of Kill 4 Me by horror author Joel M. Andre. Kill 4 Me, a technological thriller set in rural America. The story follows Casey Dwyer, a small town girl who becomes caught in a spirit’s unrelenting quest for vengeance after she receives a cryptic and seemingly harmless text message. Kill 4 Me is a supernatural thriller that explores how technology can be used to torture others through the lens of a horror novel.

When The Real Hollywood’s Book Chat caught up with Joel M. Andre on his virtual book tour with Pump Up Your Book Promotion and asked Joel how he came up with the idea for his novel, he had this to say, “I was working the graveyard shift at a former company when I received a text message. At that time I began to think how interesting it might be to be haunted through a cell phone. Anyone can grab a phone and text at random. It was an interesting form to explore if someone could be driven mad through it.

Chapter 1

Casey Dwyer wiped the steam away from the chilled windshield of her old beat up ‘85 car. White paint was starting to peel and the tires were worn dangerously thin. The cold autumn night was thick with fog, and with the moon hidden behind clouds allowed no light to beam down on the road before her.
The only light to save her were two unreliable headlight beams, which flickered on occasion, and really needed to be changed. By the sound the brakes were making, they probably needed to be changed as well.
Her pale blue eyes remained intent on the road before her; she had quickly thrown on a pair of dirty blue jeans, a white sweat top, and threw her shoulder length red hair under a tattered ball cap that had lost its logo over the years.
Tonight’s trip was unplanned and more of an annoyance than anything else. Her sister Carol had been out with some guy that she had just met, and he took her for a ride into the woods for a little action. That however, was not on Carol’s mind. So she had called Casey and begged her sister to come get her after being left alone on a hilltop.

Of all the nights she had to be in the woods. Casey shook her head slightly. It was all a setting from some bad horror film, and she waited for some maniac to jump in front of her with a chainsaw, and her sisters severed head dripping blood dangling in his hand.

However, as she approached the end of the road and the trail, the moon snuck out from behind the clouds to give her a little break, and the vaporous fog appeared to be a little less thick. Slowly she heard twigs and leaves crunch beneath the tires of the car. She hopped that she didn’t end up stuck out here. While she loved camping, she also appreciated that warm down comforter on her bed.

Finally reaching the top of that trail, she turned slightly and saw her sister, standing there shivering in the cold autumn air. Her hair a mess from the moist air, her lace top appeared to be torn around the shoulder. The cream pants she wore having met their match with the dirt and brush of the area.

Casey could see the sense of relief in her sister’s face as she approached the car. It appeared her sister was limping slightly. She watched carefully as her sister entered her car, and sat down hard. Her sister turned to her, blew some hair from her own face, and whimpered a meek thank you of some sort.

“You can’t keep doing this,” Casey started. “A different man all the time is giving you a bad image. I knew something like this was going to happen. Thank God nothing more happened to you.”

“Thanks Mom,” her sister replied rolling her eyes. “It doesn’t matter what others think of me, it’s about what I think Casey.”

“Really?” Her sister snapped. “Is it okay that your escapades are driving mom through hell? I guess it doesn’t matter, as long as Carol is happy.”

“Whatever.”

A long silence built on tension lingered in the car. Finally, Casey spoke back up.

“Are you okay? I noticed you were limping.”
“I’m fine.”
“I don’t mean to be hard on you. You just worry me sometimes.” Casey offered,

“Wonderful.” her sister pulled down and started to fidget with her coal hair. “Is Mom awake?”

“She had already gone to bed when I left.” Casey looked at her sister again. This time she noticed a dark mark under her sister’s left green eye. “Carol-”

“Just stop it now. This doesn’t leave the car.” Her sister growled. “A little make up and its fine. We move on.”

“If this asshole does it to you one time, what happens next time? The next girl might not be as lucky as you.”

Her sister huddled close to herself in silence. Casey looked on with concern, half her attention on the deserted road. This was not something she was going to drop, she would let it lie for a moment, and give her sister a little space for the ride home. However, it certainly would not be a dirty little secret.

Before them, the endless road kept rolling on. Longer this way then it seemed to have taken getting to her sister. The clouds in the sky were slowly giving way to the stars beyond them. The heavens seemed to have burst opened and tiny fragments littered the sky. Each star looking back at her was crisp and bright. Much more brilliant out here, then when they lived in the city.

Pain sank into her heart, and she let out a deep sigh. The city where her father had been gruesomely ripped in half right in front of her. The image rampaged through her mind.

It was a dull and lazy Monday morning; her father was getting ready to leave for work. He had walked outside to grab the paper at the edge of the drive, and turned to watch a garbage truck barreling down the road.

Even as regular observer he could tell it was going way to fast for the neighborhood, and he stepped back. Casey had just walked out the door to head out to school. When she looked up, the truck hit the speed bump just slightly up the street from in front of their home. One of the rear wheels tire tread broke loose, and as it passed her father whipped out at him like an alligator, snapping through him and bursting his frame into a spray of blood.

It would turn out later the truck had been stolen by a joyriding set of teens. The rest of the day blurred together. Spent between paramedics, the coroner, her mother breaking down, the most painful sense of defeat she ever saw pasted on anyone’s face.

The smell was of fragrant orange blossoms bursting open in the air. That was one smell that could make her sick to her stomach. Their smell haunted her; it was the most vivid reminder of that day. The produce aisle was something she couldn’t bear any longer.

From there the memory flashes in and out between the chocolate box her father lay in, closed off to the world. The doubt in the back of her mind there was even anyone in the casket. The way her mother stood firm and braved the sympathy showered on her. A broken woman who had no real clear path for going on, heading off strong and making it in a new world.

The move took them from the West Coast to the heart of the United States. This move took them far away from orange tress, their old life and the memory of one lazy Monday morning. Wiping away that one part of their collective life, it was one that mostly needed to be a forgotten past. But the memory of her father remained with her.

She stumbled back to the present and looked at her sister. Who had asked her something, inaudible. Trying to make sense of it, she paused a second, then gave up on guessing. “I’m sorry I missed that.”

“I said, are we going to keep driving past our turn. Casey what is wrong with you?” Her sister snapped.

Oblivious to everything else around her, she apparently had gone on autopilot during the drive. Hopefully she wasn’t too far past the turn. Carefully, she turned the car around and began to back track down the old road.

A few minutes later, they were back to the turn and back on the main road. They were heading home, back to the safety and comfort that was provided by her down comforter. The night would pass, and she would be able to reason more with her sister in the morning.

The cold outside continued to fog up the front window, she tried to auto defrost setting to see if it would help out her situation, but as with most of the rest of the car it had finally given up working. Casey knew she needed a new car. She just needed to save up some money before she got one to avoid a large car payment.

Again, the light from the moon began to disappear behind a set of clouds, making the fragile headlights on her car work all that much harder. Casey rolled down her window to help assist with the fog, and to get fresh air flowing through the car.

“Don’t you think its kind of cold for that?” Carol snarled.

“Here’s an idea, I went out of my way to help you out,” Casey shot back. “Why don’t you give a try being thankful instead of a total bitch?”

Blankly Carol looked at her, and then went deep into her own thoughts.

What an ingrate. Casey thought. Not a thank you, or any sign of emotion, besides rage. Then again, I do have to understand what she must have gone through.

The two continued to drive along the winding road, coming close a few times to the guardrail as the twisted along old curves that passed the cliff side along the river below. The water itself was hidden among the darkness of the night.

A raccoon appeared before them in the road and Casey swerved slightly to avoid it. Life was precious and all creatures had the right to live. She was determined not to kill this one because it was simply in her way.

Back in her own line, she saw in the distance another set of headlights coming in her direction. She wondered to herself what brought them out this way during the night. Though, their business didn’t really mean anything to her.

The night curves and lack of lighting frightened her slightly knowing the other car was approaching her. She held her breath at the other vehicle; a large dark truck flew past her. She then let out her breath and smiled to herself. Simple fear, without merit. It was easy to write off.

“Are you planning on going to school tomorrow?” She inquired to her sister.

“I don’t see why not,” her sister replied.

“Well, you went through a tough experience; I can cover for you if you wanted to stay home.”
“I don’t think I need to.” A cold icy response came.

Casey chose to drop the conversation; a glimmer on the waters of the river caught her eye. She focused on it, and returned her attention to the road. She knew she really needed to maintain her attention on it. The drive at night just bored her tremendously.

Quickly she flicked on the radio and watched as it began to glow. Some chick singer was trying to sound angry and scorned on the radio. There was too much bubble gum pop instrumental for it even to be taken seriously. But it filled the silence, which was starting to bother her.

She sighed deeply. Slowly she began strumming her fingers along the top of the steering wheel. Traffic was starting to pick up. She noticed a line of oncoming cars and she knew she was close to being back in her town. It was ten at night, and she tried to make it a point to be in bed around that time so she could catch the sunrise in the morning. This along with a large cup of warm sweet coffee held firm in her hands.

But by morning the skeletons were again locked deep within the closets of his mind. Until one night, he sat in the light of the full moon and prayed to the Goddesses. Believing himself to be too drunk to be heard, he asked for justice to be done. Only they heard and said, “So mote it be.” Only Kevin didn’t realize what he set in motion; instead of waiting for the justice to unfold, he turned to the dark forces for vengeance.
Rachael moved to Coyote Springs to fulfill the promise she made to the Goddesses. She came to find peace, but that is not what she found. Looking for a comfortable home for her fur-kids and herself to live she came across the listing for a small country cottage. The agent claimed the place was evil because a witch lived and died there. However the cottage opened is doors to her even though it had rejected many others, including Kevin who had inherited it after his grandmother. He warned her about the House of Christ’s attempts to purify it through fire. Rachael is certain her magic will protect her. With reservations, Kevin agrees to let her move in.
When Rachael refused to convert, the House of Christ attacked, but they were the ones who paid as the guardians of the cottage defended their new mistress. The police are suspicious of Rachael. The House of Christ claimed it was black magic; they vowed to put an end to Rachael’s evil. As Rachael comes closer to exposing the truth about the previous owner‘s murder, the violence escalates. To protect herself, her loved ones, Rachael is forced to awaken her powerful dragon spirit and channel its energy through her body. Only she does not have time to learn how to control her new gifts before the House of Christ once again attacks.
