Strawberry Fields Forever – Sweetness along the California Coast

The annual Strawberry Festival was nestled in amongst the Eucalyptus trees and acres of farmland in the city of Oxnard away from the busy 101 freeway and the snarled traffic jams.   Thousands of people enjoyed the event, May 21 and 22 in the typical California sunshine and cool ocean breezes. Live music, children’s entertainment, arts and crafts and lots of booths offered a variety of food that kept the crowds busy.
The strawberry festival is a celebration of the beautiful strawberries grown in the city Oxnard and surrounding areas, 60 miles north of Hollywood. With everything coming up strawberries one didn’t have to go very far to find their favorite strawberry desert or drink.

Just how many ways can one eat or drink strawberries?

Strawberry pie, strawberry shortcake, strawberry beer, strawberry lemonade, strawberry popcorn, strawberries dipped in chocolate, strawberry smoothies, plain strawberries, strawberries and cream (chocolate mousse and white cream) and baskets of delicious strawberries in all their sweetness.
The sounds of a Neil Diamond impersonator delighted the crowd on Sunday and he played some of Diamond’s familiar hit songs, Sweet Caroline, Holly Holy, Cracklin’ Rosie and Song Sung Blue among others. Neil Diamond is an American singer songwriter who became popular in the 1960’s and stayed popular through the 70’s and 80’s.

The Strawberry Festival has been a spring tradition for the last 25 years. It’s definitely a must see the next time you’re traveling along the Pacific Coast Highway and see all those brake lights. Take the next freeway off-ramp and follow the strawberry signs.

Oh yum! We don't get ours until mid-June...and since it has been rainy, I don't know how they'll fare. I love fresh strawberries.
